From the Arsenal: Don't treat video like your college paper.
Story Of The Day: I lost a job to AI recently.
A major soccer sponsor reached out.
They wanted a live-action series before the season started.
I was finishing the last slides of my pitch.
Then I heard nothing for a few days...
Finally, the message came through.
They had decided to make an AI commercial instead.
It was not because live action was the wrong move.
(Fans would have loved that instead of AI)
They had run out of time...
The shoot itself could have been one or two days.
Editing may have taken a week.
Client approvals.
Sponsor approvals.
Questions about what can be shown.
Does the creative make sense?
Everybody thinks they have time until they do not.
Then it becomes college again.
The paper is due tomorrow
and you have not opened
the Word document yet.
By then, AI was the version
they could actually get done.
The funny part?
I knew the team that won the bid too.
They had been making commercials long before AI became their offer.
Out of three bids,
they came in lowest...
with the better product.
More believable characters.
Better framing.
Action that had an actual arc.
Transitions that went somewhere.
Physics that felt like the real world.
That does not come from prompts.
As Mary put it:
“A lot of these AI video companies have never done video before.”
Their founders pivoted because AI is hot.
They skipped the hard years.
The location problems.
The bad shoots.
The rushed edits.
All the errors that teach you what good work needs.
And how to lower the risk of failure.
AI can help someone move faster.
It cannot hand them judgment.
That part still comes from reps.
The weird part is
I lost that job to AI
because I am a live-action company.
The team that won it
also won because they had been
a live-action company first.
Takeaways: Do not let delayed decisions choose the method for your team.
How to Apply It Today:
- Map The Window: When do you need to start? When do you need to end? What is possible inside that period?
-
Protect The Greenlight: Put time on the calendar for approvals, creative lock, and legal questions before production gets promised.
-
Keep The Gates: Give AI the samebrief, review, brand, and finaldecision gates as anyone on the team.
Pro tip: AI does not fix a short calendar. It just makes the rushed version arrive faster.
As promised: dialing in your video workflows 1% at a time.
That’s what we do inside the Arsenal.
If you're struggling with video... we should talk.
Don't skip the reps.
